What Is a Backflow Prevention Assembly?

A backflow prevention assembly is a mechanical valve system designed to allow water to flow in only one direction. Its purpose is to prevent contaminated water from flowing back into the public water supply, thereby avoiding cross-contamination in homes and businesses.

Do You Need One Installed or Tested?

Yes—Miami-Dade County Code, Chapter 32, Article VIII mandates that backflow prevention assemblies be installed on certain water services based on the degree of hazard and type of service. This includes:

• Lawn irrigation systems
• Domestic water systems
• Fire suppression systems

These assemblies must be tested upon installation and annually thereafter by a certified backflow prevention assembly tester 1.
